How Virtual Reality tricks your brain

Virtual reality is an artificial environment that is created with software and presented to the user in such a way that the user suspends belief and accepts it as a real environment. Our eyes and ears work the same whether we are in a real world or a virtual one.

When we simulate the way we experience the real world, for instance, by simulating three- dimensional scenes using stereoscopic vision, VR can make us feel like as if we are in a different world altogether, but a very realistic-feeling one.  In a VR environment, a user experiences immersion, or the feeling of being inside and a part of that world. He is also able to interact with his environment in meaningful ways.

On a computer, virtual reality is primarily experienced through two of the five senses: sight and sound. The simplest form of virtual reality is a 3-D image that can be explored interactively at a personal computer, usually by manipulating keys or the mouse so that the content of the image moves in some direction or zooms in or out. More sophisticated efforts involve such approaches as wrap-around display screens, actual rooms augmented with wearable computers, and haptics devices that let you feel the display images.

Virtual reality can be divided into:

  • The simulation of a real environment for training and education.
  • The development of an imagined environment for a game or interactive story.

To understand how effective VR works, we first need to understand a little about how the brain makes sense of the world around us.

Let us stop and think about the senses that allow us to experience the world: vision, hearing, and touch. To make sense of the world, the brain needs to first bring in information from sensory organs, such as the eyes, ears, and skin. But bringing in the information only describes sensation. What happens next is that the brain interprets this information, allowing us to understand what is happening in the environment. The brain’s interpretation of the senses which create our understanding is called perception. For instance, we can see a dog running across the room, hear her bark, and feel her fur brush against our skin—these are sensations that we come to understand and perceive as experiences.

The sensations all come together through perception to give us the experience of the dog. It is this interplay of sensation (using vision, hearing, etc.) and perception (our brain’s interpretation of this information) that creates our experience of reality.

VR Military Training – the Next Step of Evolution

As soon as the term “virtual reality” (VR) became more than just a distant concept from a sci-fi book or movie, the military was first in the line for getting the VR technology into action. The potential of reducing the cost of combat training was just too huge to remain untouched.

Along with entertainment, the military was one of the first industries that invested an awful lot of money into the development of virtual reality applications, VR headsets, and VR platforms. That also played a significant role in the advancement of VR technologies worldwide.

Since virtual reality allows for more than just “theory” training in a risk-free environment, it can be used for almost any kind of training – from firing exercises to a full-scale combat mission simulation in Arctic’s.

When it comes to investing, as a rough estimate, the U.S. spends approximately 14 billion dollars on so-called “synthetic” training every year. That is a massive amount of money to be spent on something that was just a futuristic idea three decades ago.

So, why don’t we take a closer look at why virtual reality became so popular, how exactly VR is used for soldier training, and what benefits and drawbacks it has to date?

Three Major Examples of using VR in the military

Advanced ground vehicle simulators

Virtual reality technologies allow soldiers to experience any type of vehicle in a far more immersive and realistic way than using your good old mouse and keyboard or even a driving simulator wheel. Created by a team of scientists, military-type VR vehicle simulators constitute a complex platform that can recreate such things as the shape and feel of the vehicle, its maneuverability on various terrain types and behavior under different weather conditions. Besides that, a soldier can navigate environments native to any part of the world, including the reconstructed settlements of any sort.

VR boot camp experience

The gaming industry has greatly influenced military training. As it was becoming more and more popular, the military also started to adopt gaming practice as a way to train their soldiers, many of which grew up playing video games.

Although the first military games were played on regular consoles, they allowed future soldiers to learn lots of techniques and strategies that can be applied in real-life combat scenarios.

Virtual battlefields

Unfortunately, many of the real-life military training types involve a certain degree of risk. Whether it’s parachute jumping or heavy artillery exercises, fatal accidents still occur from time to time.

However, with the help of virtual reality, soldiers can be placed into a risk-free environment, which will let them safely carry out any combat drills without any harm whatsoever.

Who is smart?

Our lives in the current era are so closely intertwined with smart phones that there is a false sense of them being an absolute necessity.  Since the time human life started on this planet upto a couple of centuries back, there was no electricity and people lived their lives with only food, water , shelter and clothing recognized as absolute needs. Of course, all technological inventions and machinery used then worked on mechanical and non-electrical sources of power. But then with the passing of each decade and man learning to harness electricity from various sources, life started to become more and more easier. The boom continued over time till the nineties arrived and with it the internet.

Before the internet was introduced, computers only acted as tools for storage of information and large scale computations thus helping humans manage large corporations and companies. The internet revolutionized human life like never before and its use for instant communication and easy acquisition of knowledge made it a global force and a unifier of humankind in the real sense of the term. The computers sat on desks and humans had to go to them to connect with the virtual world through the internet.

With the advent of smart phones in the 21st century, we now have mini computers glued to our hands and it is as if we have grown an appendage and these phones have become an extension of our selves. While smart phones really have made life very comfortable with almost everything available at the tips of our fingers, they have also been responsible for sucking us into the virtual world and keeping us there for most part of our waking time. Social media apps like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and others have kept people hooked to their phones; it is not surprising that a human nowadays on waking up in the morning hunts for his mobile first to find out about new happenings in the virtual world and even carries it into the loo. Opening and checking various social media apps on the phone throughout the day is an addiction that people are not able to get out of. Posting “selfies” or checking what some other person is doing at a particular time of the day seems to be of utmost importance to phone users. Rather than recognizing the fact that we are biological organisms with biological and emotional needs, more and more humans are escaping into this make believe world not realizing that they are developing an addiction which is harmful in the long run. It hampers the development and nurturing of interpersonal relations, makes a person lose touch with reality and makes a person a slave to the “smart”phone. Are we smart enough to keep the phone in our control or is the phone that is keeping us hooked to it day in and day out “smart”?

The decision is ours to make.

Role of Technology In spreading awareness about covid-19

Covid-19 has caused havoc in the world today with thousands of citizen across the globe losing their lives against this deadly virus. According to a report USA has crossed a mark of 1 lakh. The cure for this virus is still under development so in such situations “precaution is better than cure”. And in order to take the precaution  the awareness to the masses is necessary. The Indian government has utilized the technology is right order to spread awareness amongst the masses.

When the issue started getting serious in early February, The caller tunes of all phones were given a caller tune or a message before that briefing the masses about covid-19 and its precautionary measures. They also gave out the symptoms and  the helpline number for the same. In a country of billions where cell phones plays a major a role this caller tune was a huge success and people who were not aware about it got the information from the meme pages on the same. Speaking about meme pages social media platforms have done a remarkable job in spreading awareness. Right from mails to instagram hash tags. Some social media platforms also started challenges like “stayhome” and so on .

One of the best ways to prevent the spread of this deadly disease is by social distancing and avoiding mass gathering. In a busy city like New York it was difficult to maintain the norms. So Netflix came with a solution where in the spoilers of the popular shows were posted on billboard. Another initiative was the series of competition and quizzes on the government platform. Goa Based engineering students developed an application that tracks the covid-19 graph. The app helped the general public to keep a close track on the same. Another web application telling you the distance between you and the last detected covid-19 patient was developed and has gained popularity amongst the youngsters. This tracker was developed by a Goan.

Technology like always did its part .On a higher note the data is being studied and conclusions are drawn and things are verified and re verified. This was all possible due to statistics and data science on a larger note. Chat bots briefing the masses about covid-19 was developed by the center and the state government. A self assessment test was also developed telling you the probability of one having covid-19. Technology did its part and its still advancing. All we can do is hope for the best.

Stay safe, stay hydrated

‘Indian Railways – The Heroes’

Indian Railways fights COVID-19 pandemic! Piyush Goyal-led Indian Railways has dedicated more than 6,500 hospital beds, which is half the number of beds from its 125 railway hospitals, to COVID-19 patients across the country, according to an IE report. Out of these, one third of the beds will be fitted with ventilators, leading to 2,000 such beds. The Railway Board, headed by Chairman, Vinod Kumar Yadav, announced on March 30, 2020 that as many as 20,000 train coaches spread across all railway zones in the country, can be converted into isolation wards, to develop quarantine facilities for Coronavirus patients, or to place individuals showing symptoms of the infection. The Railway Board has issued orders to all zones that in the initial phase, 5,000 train coaches should be converted.

According to the report, Indian Railways has around 13,000 beds in its 125 railway hospitals across India, including in remote areas. Now, Indian Railways is in the process of deciding whether to dedicate around 60-70 strategically located railway hospitals completely for the COVID-19 patients or to keep some of the key hospitals in a dual mode, having dedicated entry points and exclusive wings and blocks for the Coronavirus patients

Following initiatives have been taken by Indian Railways in the fight against COVID-19:

Conversion of coaches to serve as quarantine/isolation facilities: Indian Railways is converting 5000 train coaches across the country to serve as quarantine/isolation facilities for 80000 beds for COVID-19.Action has been started by Zonal Railways on a war footing. Conversion of 3250 coaches has already been completed.

5000 beds earmarked for treatment of COVID patients: Around 5,000 beds in 17 dedicated hospitals and 33 hospital blocks in Railway Hospitals have been identified for treatment of COVID-19 patients. These hospitals and blocks are being made ready for this purpose.11,000 quarantine beds: 11,000 quarantine beds have been made available across the Indian Railways establishments to fight COVID-19.

Availability of medical equipment-Ventilators and PPEs: Availability of sufficient number of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Ventilators etc. would be critical in fight against COVID-19. Action has been taken by Railway zones and production units to procure ventilators, PPEs and medical equipment to meet their needs to fight COVID-19. It may be noted that Railways has already started  In-house  production of  Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). It is striving to produce around 1000 PPEs per day which may be upscaled further.

Railway Health Services offered to all Central Government Employees: Railway Health Services have been made available to all Central Government Employees across the country on showing their Identity cards at the Railway Hospitals/Health Centres.

The workshops and coaching depots of various railway zones have been manufacturing certain equipment such as beds, saline stands, face masks, sanitisers for the need of the hour. However, now, the Railway Board has asked the zones to explore ways for procuring around 2000 ventilators, which will need to be fitted with the hospital beds. Presently, only 100 ventilators are available with the railway network.

In this regard, authorities have decided to procure ventilators from external sources such as ventilator manufacturers and factories. Help and suggestions are also being sought from the Ministry of Health and Family Affairs. Apart from this, all railway units have been directed to initiate the mass production of PPE or personal protective equipment. The national transporter has also given the approval to the zonal heads for hiring more number of doctors, paramedical staff in order to control the COVID-19 crisis. Retired railway doctors can also be re-employed on a temporary basis to meet the higher demand for medical supervision.

Along with the real heroes of the country, Indian Railways are contributing on their part. And if these non living things can contribute towards the fight againt Covid-19, Why can’t We?

IOT Edge Devices and Edge Computing

The Internet of Things promises a digital transformation in all the aspects of our modern life that is from changing the temperature of a thermostat at home or waiting at an IoT-enabled traffic light,we find it almost everywhere. Connected sensors and the data they generate promise a set of experiences that were largely the stuff of science fiction a decade ago.

According to Cisco’s forecast, there will be 850 ZB of data generated by mobile users and IoT devices by 2021. With increasing volume, several challenges like latency surface with regard to centralized cloud deployments will emerge. For real-time applications, the functioning should be more local, and that is where edge devices and edge computing comes into the picture.

An edge device is any piece of hardware that controls data flow at the boundary. between two networks. Mobile phones, IoT devices, and embedded devices that request services from edge servers are called edge devices.

Edge devices fulfill a variety of roles, depending on what type of device they are, but they essentially play as network entry (or exit) points. Some of common tasks of edge devices are the transmission, routing, processing, monitoring, filtering, translation and storage of data at the edge of the network.

Now according to Cisco’s forecast, the vast amount of data generated needs to be processed in a very short time ,that is to have a faster response time and lower latency.

In edge computing, the massive data generated by different types of IoT devices can be processed at the network edge instead of transmitting them to the centralized cloud infrastructure owing to bandwidth and energy consumption concerns.

So,the data will be analysed data locally, the data will be taken closer to where it is stored in real time. Rather than sending it far away to a centralized data centre.

The best way to visualize edge computing architecture is to think of it as a three-tier architecture as shown in the below diagram. The first tier is the local devices and applications; the second tier is the edge layer, and finally the public cloud as the third tier .

So basically the Edge computing is tapped for the following advantages, Low latency,Low energy consumption,Scalability, and Security/Privacy.

Popular hardware components for edge also include industrial sensors, Raspberry Pi, gateways, microchips, collaborative robots, self-driving vehicles, drones and unmanned aerial vehicles.

Edge devices will proliferate with the availability of billions of smartphones and increasing 5G users. Smartphones and 5G bases are part of the edge. With the proliferation of 5G smartphones, combined with the demand for privacy, the ecosystem is ripe for edge devices to flourish and transform the way we interact with digital information.

Flatten the curve using Robotics

With the Covid19 situation around us, everything has come to a stand-still and humans are being imprisoned in their own house. But for a living one has to take in needed calories to survive otherwise before the Covid19, hunger would take a toll on humanity. So with the lockdown situation we are in right now, it becomes utmost important to have a Robotic companion in every house who could walk to the market and buy the essentials for the people. It need not be a humanoid, but just a wheeled robot with a container on top.

With the placing of orders being online people can place their orders on an app and do the payment. The Bot will have a display on top of it indicating the order number and details of the order. The shopkeeper can place the ordered things in the container and click delivered button on the app on his cell phone. This is received by the user who ordered and also the Bot. Now the Bot closes the container and is on the way back home. So, it is essential that the Bot remembers the trajectory it followed while moving towards the shop so that it can trace it back to it’s original location. This can be easily configured using a camera and stored in the memory of the Bot.

Secondly the Government or the municipality or even the Village panchayat can take help of drones in supplying Essential commodities to the people even if it is in the remote areas. The severity of the situation demands us to be smart and use the resources already available with us to put into good effect and not wait for someone to build a humanoid who works for us. And with the existing Robotic capability we can make this world a better place for us by flattening the Covid19 curve using social distancing with the help of Robotics.

Equity Investment for Everyone

Every market is a place where buyers and sellers meet to transact. An equity market (or its synonymous equivalent, the stock market) is a platform for trading in shares or equities offered by companies in return for money. It is the place where buyers and sellers meet to trade in Listed Companies that have made an offering of their equity to public investors. These investors buy an ownership stake in the company expecting to receive a share of the profits in the form of dividends, or profiting from the growth of its stock price, or both.

What makes equity trading attractive is that the investors can become partial owners of a company. To a company, selling shares is a way to raise capital to expand their business. In order to do so, it will list its stocks on one of the stock exchanges like the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).

Equity share trading is roughly in two forms – spot/cash market where the stocks are traded for immediate delivery and futures market where the shares’ delivery is due at a later date. The normal trading time for equity market in India is between 9:15 am to 3:30 pm, Monday to Friday. On Saturday and Sunday and on public holidays, trading does not happen unless there are special circumstances like mock trading or a special 60-minute Diwali Muhurtam trading in the evening.

There are advantages and disadvantages to trading equity market. The outcome of any situation is dependent on the way we behave.

Pros:

  • Opportunity to make huge profits
  • Easy buying and selling of stocks

Cons:

  • Improper research before investing can lead to a loss
  • Market volatility due to trends like COVID-19 can erode wealth overnight

To trade in equity share market, you will need the following:

  1. A demat and trading account,
  2. Funds to buy your selected stocks
  3. A good broker platform to execute the trades

Thanks to technological advancements, you can do online equity trading, at your home, office or even while on the move.

Skilful and experienced traders will always look for evidence to use before investing in the market. Some traders might look for trends on a chart while other traders might look to see if demand might be increasing for a commodity.

The evidence that traders use will typically be classified into two broad categories, fundamental analysis and technical analysis.

Both types of analysis allow a trader to collect evidence to form a decision about the trades they are considering placing in the market. The analysis will form the basis of where the trader thinks the market will move and thus, whether to buy or sell a given futures contract.

Fundamental Analysis

Fundamental analysis is a method of evaluating securities by attempting to measure the intrinsic value of a stock. Fundamental analysts study everything from the overall economy and industry conditions to the financial condition and management of companies. Earnings, expenses, assets, and liabilities are all important characteristics to fundamental analysts.

Technical Analysis

Technical analysis differs from fundamental analysis in that the stock’s price and volume are the only inputs. The core assumption is that all known fundamentals are factored into the price, thus there is no need to pay close attention to them. Technical analysts do not attempt to measure a security’s intrinsic value, but, instead, use stock charts to identify patterns and trends that suggest what a stock will do in the future.

Finally, it is always good to have some ground rules before you trade in equity.

  • Never go against the sentiment of the equity market today.
  • Buy low, sell high.
  • Think long term.
  • Be extra cautious about intraday trading.
  • A Rs. 1000 stock is not expensive and a Rs. 5 stock is not cheap.

Find Yourself

“Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom”.Every person on this earth is born with god’s gift. All of us have some hidden talent, of which some are aware of and rest not.If you know it, you are lucky and happiest person on the earth.

As this is an era of internet technology, everything just runs on the fingers.People are so busy in using the laptops or mobiles.People have become so busy in their life, that they have forgotten their talent and got themselves trapped in this web of internet. It has been essential to release them from this trap and help them to enjoy the flavor of life.People has to identify their talent, which has been buried under their day to day life activities.Ex. hidden talent of doctor can be , he be a good cook. An engineer may be a good singer etc.

Some of the ways to discover your hidden talent are:

1.Listen to others.

2.What you enjoy the most.

3.Ask your family what you loved as child.

4.Look your both strengths and weakness.

5.Try things that are easy.

However, finding yourself does’nt restrict you to hidden talent or hobby. It can also mean finding your position or where you stand. It emphasize on what is your position in any field and how can you upgrade it.Regarding the same , there are two instances.First, there was a boy who got block in the eight semester of engineering, as he was not taking the studies seriously and was engaged in other activities.Further, that block became the turning point in his life.He didn’t allowed his self morale to go low.Due to encouragement from his teachers, friends and family, overcome all his faults and next year, he became the topper of his class.Second example of a  boy from high school.Till SSC preliminary exam, he was an average student, but never came in first 10 in his class.Encouragement from teachers and family members made him realize that he can be one of the first five rank holders. He identified his position and capability. Further he took required efforts to fulfill the challenge. Finally, the result was that he came first  in the school for SSC board exam. The dedication towards study and efforts gave him the required fruit. These situations tell us that whatever we want, we can achieve, only required is mind’s willingness.

Another way of finding yourself  may be adjusting to the present situation in which you are living. It is not true that, if you have all the facilities than only you will prosper in the life or you will get good marks. All depends on you alone, whether you are ready to face the situation or want to curse it.Every rich people’ s children are  not always intelligent or highly qualified. We alway get to read in newspaper that the boy living in slum cracked the UPSC exam or a son of rickshaw owner gets a good salary job in MNC etc. These are the people who overcome the situation, finds their inner capability and succeed in life. All should learn from such people, after  having all the facilities can not utilize it properly. One  instance , illustrating the same. There was a boy from poor background, with five siblings and had lost his father. They were not even getting their daily food. But he was hardworking and curious to learn new things on his own.He was doing any work that was given by his neighbour. In return , neighbor was teaching him and giving the leftover food.By god’s grace and help from neighbour’ s and good helping teachers, he cleared his all exams. Finally, he got a good job in reputed company. From there his growth chart started , but still was helpful to others and remained ground to earth.

So,Think about your current situation, accept the reality. When you accept the reality, you give yourself the power to create the change that you want.Sometimes you cannot change situation, then change your attitude. Finally, you are the creator, everything exists in you. Only requirement is to Find Yourself, to be happy, satisfied, successful & to achieve greater heights.
